After having to postpone their wedding several times, Melanie and João finally celebrated their wedding in Palmela in July 2021.

Before their wedding in Palmela, João proposed to Melanie in Havana during a trip to Cuba. After six years of dating and many more years of friendship, the moment was so unexpected that Melanie describes the proposal as surreal — she only truly felt it was real when she told her father, with whom she shares a very close relationship.

How did the wedding planning process go?
“I can say it was a difficult process. Planning a wedding is not easy, and during the Covid period it was even harder. On top of that, an accident happened and everything seemed to fall apart.
But we managed to rebuild. I had a lot of help from my family (many women) and from my father-in-law.
In the end, we managed to create the wedding we had always imagined.”

Do you feel that the pandemic affected your wedding in Palmela?
“Very much. We actually had five wedding dates. Because of Covid, because of my accident and also due to family reasons.
It wasn’t easy. Especially for me as the bride, I felt very discouraged because nothing seemed to go well. I also felt uncomfortable after losing a finger. But I received a lot of support and strength from the people around me, and I managed to overcome it.
I cannot say I loved planning a wedding like other brides do, because every time we moved forward something else seemed to happen and everything had to be postponed again.
But we managed to win this battle.”
