I’ve been wanting to visit the Azores for a long time, so when I had the opportunity to visit the island of São Miguel to work, I was really excited!
A few months before I was traveling, I was contacted by Katie and Pauri, a couple from Boston who came to Portugal and was interested in doing a photo shoot. At first I thought they were going to travel to Lisbon, but soon I realized that they were going to travel to the Azores after all. Not only that, they were going to be on the same island as me, at the same time as me!
It was the first time they would visit the Azores on their honeymoon. Without knowing, they contacted a photographer from Lisbon who was going to be at the same time as them, on the same island as them. I call that a huge coincidence!
I had never visited the Azores, though I was at the top of my list of places to visit. So when a bride asked me for availability to photograph her wedding in the Azores, I jumped right away for the opportunity!
There was a problem: I didn’t know the island! I didn’t know which place to shoot, how the time or distances are usually. The plan was to schedule their session for the end of my 10-day stay on São Miguel Island, so I had time to get to know the island.
The hydrangeas that flank the roads are impressive!
The search for a perfect location I did in the days leading up to the session made up for it when I found a headland with spectacular light.

For me the best of the photo shoot was to get to know this amazing couple. I’ve always said and continue to say that what I like the most about what I do is the possibility of meeting fantastic people and who often become friends!
A few months after our photo shoot, as early as the end of the year, I received this message from Pauri:
“Hope you’re doing well! We get constant compliments on your photos of us from the summer. It was truly one of our highlights of the year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Pauri & Katie”
